Efforts are underway to find ways to keep the mentally ill from stacking up in Denver’s jails, and the reverberations could affect surrounding communities as well.
The initiatives range from hiring treatment specialists to help the mentally ill in the jails to the creation of a specialized mental health docket at Denver’s courthouse.

Coloradans grappling with substance abuse, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health disorders will now have their illnesses covered on par with physical ailments by their health insurance providers after a bill was signed into law last week by Gov. Bill Ritter.
Senate Bill 36 also adds depressive disorders dysthymia and cyclothymia, social phobia, agoraphobia and general anxiety disorder to the list of mental health illnesses for which insurance companies must provide the same coverage as they do physical illnesses.
