Meet CBHC’s New Member: Mile High Behavioral Healthcare

We are thrilled to welcome Mile High Behavioral Healthcare (MHBHC) as the newest member of the Colorado Behavioral Healthcare Council. Founded in 1960, MHBHC brings decades of history, expertise, and dedication to our collaborative network. As one of Colorado’s oldest nonprofits providing treatment services, they have long been a leader in innovative prevention and treatment approaches for alcohol and drug use.

MHBHC’s mission is simple and powerful: to provide a caring, seamless continuum of behavioral healthcare to those in need. Their guiding principles—empathy, respect, authenticity, and advocacy—reflect a deep commitment to meeting individuals where they are and empowering them to “shape healthy, viable, complete lives and communities.”

Robert E. Dorshimer, MAed, CAS, known to many as Bob, serves as Chief Executive Officer. Since joining MHBHC in 2006, Bob has been a passionate advocate for individuals struggling with substance use and mental health challenges. His background includes leadership roles with the Denver Crime Control Commission, the Mayor’s Office of Drug Strategy, and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center’s ARTS Special Services Clinic, where he focused on holistic substance use treatment for the HIV-positive community. He also brings extensive experience supporting the LGBTQ+ community and the child welfare system.

When asked about MHBHC’s proudest achievement, Bob highlighted the Family Preservation Center (FPC)—a low-barrier, one-stop model and safe haven for children, youth, and families. The FPC houses several cornerstone programs, including the Colfax Community Network, Adolescent Behavioral Health, and PRIDEvolution. Together, these initiatives nurture youth, foster belonging, and provide lasting, effective treatment—truly meeting people right where they are.

Like many providers across the state, Bob noted that MHBHC’s most pressing challenge is the impact of recent funding cuts on clients who already face significant barriers to care. To sustain their mission amid a tightening budget environment, MHBHC is actively pursuing grants and leveraging support from their foundation and individual donors to preserve current service levels.

By joining CBHC, MHBHC reinforces its commitment to collaboration and shared advocacy. “To ensure that the needs of our community are met, we need to be involved with other providers and community partners,” Bob said. The organization looks forward to contributing its expertise—particularly in holistic treatment, integrated care for specialized populations, and child welfare services—while learning from and partnering with fellow members.

Looking ahead, MHBHC is eager to strengthen its programs and continue advancing behavioral health care across Colorado.

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Robert Dorshimer and the entire Mile High Behavioral Healthcare team! We look forward to a strong and collaborative partnership.
